The Six Horses of Zhaoling

DIGITAL RESTORATION

Project Overview

The Six Horses of Zhaoling are six large stone relief sculptures created for the mountaintop mausoleum of the second emperor of the Tang Dynasty, Emperor Taizong of Tang (598–649). The sculptures sustained significant damage over the years, and have been moved from their original location, with four now residing at the Beilin Museum in Xi'an, China, and two at the Penn Museum in the United States. This project aims to produce a complete digital reconstruction of the six stone horses and the upper three terraces of the emperor's mausoleum, known as Zhaoling, for the purpose of research, education, and preservation. The project is a collaboration between the Center for the Art of East Asia at University of Chicago, Xi'an Jiaotong University, the Penn Museum, and the Beilin Museum, and is generously funded by the Cyrus Tang Foundation.
